Area Attractions

Alder Brook House is located in the heart of the Champlain Valley, ten miles east of Burlington, Vermont’s largest city. Recently listed as one of the best places to live in the United States, Burlington features a vibrant panoply of arts, music, entertainment, shopping and top notch educational institutions, all set against the dramatic backdrop of historic Lake Champlain. Take in a triple A league ball game with the Vermont Lake Monsters or a dinner cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen III. Less than an hour away you will find the ski areas of Sugarbush and Stowe. If cross-country skiing is your passion, try the miles of first class trails at the Trapp Family Lodge, founded and owned by the von Trapp family of Sound of Music fame. In summer, drive to the top of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s tallest peak, hike the Long Trail and the myriad trail network surrounding it or ride the scenic bike paths of Stowe and Burlington. On your way home, forget the diet and stop for a tour at the home of Ben and Jerry’s in Waterbury.  Watch the best ice cream in the world made and try a free sample of the flavour of the day.

Closer to home you can find plenty to do as well. Less than two miles west of Alder Brook House on route 15 is the Essex Outlet Mall with both national and local stores to browse. Try pub fare at Cody’s, Italian at Mimmo’s or tuck into a more formal meal at The Essex Resort and Spa. The multi screen Essex Cinema always offers a wide selection of current films.  Just across the highway from the mall you will find mini golf, a batting cage and a generous driving range.  Four miles away find the village of Essex Junction with its shops and restaurants. Essex Junction is the home of the Champlain Valley Fairground where various types of entertainment is available all through the year.  Just outside the village on Susie Wilson Road the Family Fun center, new in 2015, offers indoor go-carts and bumper cars, indoor rock climbing and other entertainment.

Who doesn’t love crafts and antiques? Vermont is a great place to hunt them and nowhere is better than the Champlain Valley and the Northeast Kingdom. A trip east on Route 15 or south on Route 2 will yield a plethora of fascinating shops. Autumn is a wonderful time to follow our antiquing routes as they also encompass some of the best foliage views in the state.  Spring and fall both feature antique and craft fairs at the Champlain Valley Fairgrounds in Essex Junction.
